"Quieter than its neighbour Kololi, Kotu is a great place to unwind, yet with easy access to bars, restaurants and nightlife."
Kotu may not be quite as lively as Kololi, the resort next door. But it's still got its fair share of facilities, including shops and a reasonable range of restaurants. The sandy beach is good too. And it's backed by several lively beach bars where you can sip a cocktail and watch the sun go down over the Atlantic, often to the accompaniment of live music. As for other activities, if you're into golf, it's definitely worth packing your clubs. A short walk will bring you to the Fajara Club, an 18-hole course set between Kotu Creek and the Ocean. It's not what you'd call 'green and pleasant'(you'll actually be putting on 'browns' because of the difficulty of growing grass), but there are some fun holes, including the infamous Devil's Island. Despite its African-style low-rise hotels, Kotu is more cosmopolitan than traditional Gambian. However, if you crave some local colour and culture, all you have to do is head inland to Serekunda. Once a small village, it's now the biggest centre of population in the country, and will give you a real taste of the bustling melee that typifies a West African town. Alternatively, for a quieter experience go down to Kotu and visit the Bijilo Forest Park. It's a small coastal wildlife reserve which has delightful walking trails through lush, tropical scenery, as well as being home to monkeys and colourful birds.
