Holidays in Galu Beach

If you prefer your tropical shores footprint-free, consider Galu Beach. It joins on to the up-tempo hub that is Diani Beach. But while extrovert Diani does a mean line in shops, bars and restaurants, Galu takes a much more conservative approach to things. Hotels are the exception rather than the rule and a night scene is yet to emerge so what you get is a much quieter vibe. And more importantly, it lets you focus your full attention on what Galu does best – the beach. It's the ultimate postcard fantasy. To the front, luminous waters roll out lazily from the horizon. To the back, a curtain of casuarinas and palms sway to the rhythm of the ocean breeze. And in between, a pristine carpet of white sands insists you leave your shoes at the door. It stays pretty deserted, too – if you don't count the monkeys, that is - so if you harbour dreams of being a castaway, this is the place to do it. In terms of what else you'll find here, there's a good spectrum of watersports, including diving, snorkelling, jet-skiing and fishing. The beach is highly regarded among the kite-surfing crowd, too, and there's a watersports centre where you can sign up for lessons. If you do decide you want to pick up the pace, just head for the centre of Diani, about a 15-minute drive away. This is paradise with a best-of-both-worlds setting.
