Guide to Port El Kantaoui

Port el Kantaoui, 7km north of Sousse, is Tunisia's answer to the chic marinas found along the Spanish coast. Even the countryside has a deliciously Mediterranean feel to it. As well as drawing the yachting crowd, this purpose-built resort offers a wonderfully relaxing (and affordable) holiday for those who are more at home on dry land – say on an excellent sandy beach. Kantaoui's two 18-hole golf courses are close by and there's tennis too. The restaurants, shops and cafes in the busy marina are a focal point here. Whilst the hotels offer a mix of discos and live entertainment, this is not a place for hectic nightlife.

Beaches

The majority of beaches in the tourist resorts of Tunisia are long, sandy and well-maintained with generally safe swimming. The beach at Port el Kantaoui is no exception with soft pale sand.

Eating out

The marina, with its various bars and restaurants, is always popular and offers a range of local and international specialities in superb surroundings.

Nightlife

Nightlife generally revolves around the hotels and their own entertainment. The bars and restaurants are busy and popular, and are mostly situated around the marina, the focal point of the resort and definitely the place to take an evening stroll.

Shopping

Undertake the traditional Tunisian pastime of 'haggling' in the souks of Hammamet, Sousse and Monastir. The classic things to buy are woollen carpets, pottery, leather, copperware and arabesque bird cages, the best of which come from Sidi Bou Said.

Local information

You can take excursions into the Sahara or north to Tunis, which are often the highlight of any stay. Visit the graphic mosaics in the Bardo Museum, itself a former palace, or the hilltop confection of Sidi Bou Said, with its white-painted houses framed with blue-screened windows. However, in general, the pace of life is slow and the idea is to relax and enjoy life in the sun!
