Playa Pesquero scores top marks for its setting. Set on the edge of its namesake beach, it looks out over powder-soft sands and endless blue seas. And as the nearest big town, Guardalavaca, is a 40-minute drive away, it's got a real castaway feel.

The hotel makes a big impression, too. Topped with palm thatch, it looks right at home in its Robinson Crusoe-style surroundings. But inside, it's more modern elegance than desert island chic. Think uninterrupted sweeps of marble floor. Water gardens complete with Roman-style statues. And plenty in the way of stylish rattan furniture.

It's the pool that steals the show, though. Large, curvy and set into a spacious sun terrace, it's surrounded by sun loungers and well-established palms that provide lots of natural shade. It comes with a sprinkling of tiny islands that add to the exotic ambience. And there's even a swim-up bar, so you don't have to get out of the water for that fruity cocktail.

As for the rooms, they're the epitome of Caribbean-style luxury. Simply styled around a palette of yellow, blue and white, they're accessorised with rattan armchairs and decorative wrought-iron headboards. And muslin canopies over the beds bring a touch of romance to the space.

Factor in nine restaurants, six bars and activities that range from Spanish lessons and dancing to watersports and archery, and it's easy to see why guests come back here year after year.
