If you're looking to escape somewhere with a blissful disregard for clock-watching, the ClubHotel Riu Merengue will have you on carefree island-time from the moment you step into its peaceful lobby. It's all comfy wicker sofas and cool-tiled floors here – the perfect spot for a quiet drink when you want to escape the sun. It won't be long before you can resist the lure of the tropical grounds though. Hidden among slender palms and blooms of flowers, a freeform pool sits at the heart of the complex and is the spot most people make a beeline for. And who could blame them? Sunk into a smart block-paved sun terrace with cushioned loungers and raffia parasols, it looks out over the sparkling ocean. And just to the side, you'll find 'La Plaza', a breezy, open-air bar with fluttering muslin drapes and pretty wrought-iron tables and chairs. When you fancy a spell on the crumbly stuff, the palm-peppered beach is just steps away, so you can flit between the two 'til your heart's content. Don't worry if sitting still drives you to distraction though. Activity-wise, there's so much on offer you'll have trouble squeezing it all in. One minute you can be shaking off your stresses with some hip-shaking dance lessons. The next sailing through the twinkling waters with a sailing session. You can also battle it out on the tennis courts. Get in shape with an aerobics class. Or give windsurfing, kayaking and scuba-diving a go. There's never a dull moment at the Merengue. And as part of the RIU Resort, a trio of hotels sprinkled along the shores here, the shared facilities in this little pocket of paradise are first-class. What's more, they all share colourful Caribbean Street, a traditional-style shopping strip where you can buy anything from cutting-edge threads to one-off pieces of jewellery. On the dining front, you'll find the Merengue's main buffet restaurant 'La Roca' a welcome sight with a mouth-watering choice of dishes from around the globe. Plus, the poolside 'Macumba' snack bar morphs into two speciality a la carte eateries after dark. After a slap-up meal, end your day perusing the cocktail list in one of the hotel's bars. Catch a glittering stage show in 'La Rumba'. Or strike a pose yourself in the resort's 'Pacha' disco. Then once you're all done, retire to the oasis of your Caribbean-style room, with its bright jazzy decor, light wicker furnishings and smooth polished floors. And we bet you won't have clock-watched all day.
