If peaceful and picturesque are at the top of your tick list, it won't take you long to get into holiday mode at the Iberostar Costa Dorada. Sandwiched between acres of coconut groves and a stretch of golden sand, it's got tropical escape written all over it.
Being just footsteps from the beach, you'll probably devote large spells of your time to the shores. But when you fancy some sand-free tanning, the roomy pool is just as inviting, with its Roman pillars and little islands. There are even volleyball and basketball areas. And it's sunk into a huge terrace, accessorised with cushioned sun beds, raffia parasols and crowds of palm trees.
If you want to crank the pace up a little, there's a packed activities programme here. You can learn the lingo with some Spanish lessons. Practise your target skills with an archery session. Or master the Merengue with a dance class. Plus there are loads of sports and watersports to have a go at. And if you fancy a spot of shopping, there's a smart row of glass-fronted boutiques and jewellery shops near the lobby.
On the food front, the Iberostar goes all out to impress. The main buffet restaurant 'El Mercado' is tucked away in gorgeous gardens. With a thatched ceiling and fluttering muslin drapes instead of glass, it sets a sophisticated mood. And there are also three a la carte eateries. You can go Mexican at 'La Hacienda'. Try Brazilian cuisine in 'El Rodizio'. Or tuck into speciality seafood in 'El Bohio' which doubles up as a snack bar during the day.
To top it all, you've got a choice of relaxing bars, a spa that scores high in the treatment stakes and a service that's second to none. A laid-back island escape – the Iberostar Costa Dorada scores top marks all round.
