An introduction to Barcelo Punta Cana

This hotel is big, it's bold and it's positively bursting with things to do. For a start, it's snatched a prime spot on the island's east coast – a sun-blushed slice of beachfront that simply begs to be sprawled upon. Spend lazy days sifting sugary sand between your fingers or swimming in the whirlpool bath-warm sea.

Then, of course, there's the hotel itself to consider. The main pool – which, by the way, is huge – is peppered with palm trees, with a fabulous swim-up bar thrown in for good measure. And with plenty of comfy, cushioned sunloungers dotted around the sun terrace, topping up your tan is a piece of cake. A second new swimming pool is now open which faces the ocean and includes a new pool for the kids with toboggans.

Which brings us nicely to all the things you can do when you're not lounging in the sun. As well as all the usual activities you might expect, like tennis, football and a full range of watersports, there's a rock-climbing wall - you can even have a go on a circus trapeze. If the kids are coming too, there's a hotel-run children's club to keep them entertained, plus a playground which will help get rid of all their excess energy.

Inside the hotel some of the bedrooms have been refurbished to feature a contemporary Caribbean theme with tropical colours, plush bedding and spa style bathrooms with walk-in showers. All that and the beach is only footsteps from your door.

Come meal times, treat your tastebuds to a host of international flavours in the main restaurant's buffet. Or go for one of the themed restaurants, which serve everything from Dominican and Italian to Tex-Mex and Japanese. And there's plenty in the way of evening entertainment, too. Revel in the razzle dazzle of a live show, place your bets in the glitzy casino, or dance 'til your feet hurt in the hotel disco. So, whether you're being pampered in the spa, flying through the air on a trapeze or simply stretching out in the sun, you're guaranteed the holiday of a lifetime here.
