An introduction to Clubhotel Riu Bambu

ClubHotel Riu Bambu walks the line between luxurious and fun. It's got plenty of elegant touches such as the temple-like lobby and the grand three-way staircase that drops down into the pool. Plus it's got a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere that makes it a friendly place to stay. So it's easy to see why it's part of Thomson's BeachClub collection.

Take the rooms for instance. Spread across the gardens in candy-coloured, two-storey villas, they give the hotel a village-like feel. Inside, they're home to spacious bedrooms complete with two double beds and satellite TVs. They're light and airy with a pale yellow colour scheme, ceiling fans and air-conditioning. Plus they're furnished with a few extras unique to RIU, like a special minibar and spirit dispenser.

And it's not just the rooms that work the simple-but-sophisticated look. Set into a wide sun terrace, the curvy pool is dotted with sun loungers, fringed with palms and comes with a whirlpool bath that resembles a large rock pool. But the star of the pool scene is the large swim-up bar at one end of the pool – it's big, dome-topped and has a great cocktail menu.

The beach is impressive, too. A 14-mile stretch of white sand, it's certainly easy on the eye. A generous helping of sun loungers sits in the shade of banana trees and palms. And, of course, endless sea views are a given. You'll find the wedding gazebo here, too. Not to mention a wide range of watersports including windsurfing, sailing, and kayaking all feature on the must-try list.

Food-wise, there are two restaurants to choose from. The grand, column-clad main buffet is decked out with dark wood furniture and crisp, cream table linen. The a la carte restaurant serves steaks and Italian dishes against a backdrop of bright blue and yellow. And the Mama Juana poolside bar-come-restaurant does a mean line in breakfast and daytime snacks.
