White sands, turquoise seas and swaying coconut palms – settings don't get much better than this. And Grand Palladium Bavaro Resort and Spa certainly does it justice. Doing its bit for the environment, the hotel's landscaped gardens are designed to enhance the jungle surroundings. Cue mangrove forest walkways, enormous ponds and a whole host of flamingos and lizards.

Making the most of their jungle garden, the rooms are spread out between small two-storey villas. They're linked by paved walkways, painted in muted shades of terracotta and butter-yellow and come with corner balconies to give you plenty of privacy. Inside, they're tastefully tropical with polished marble floors, hydromassage bath tubs and standalone showers. They've got all the usual bits and pieces as standard, like satellite TVs, air-conditioning and minibars. And little extras like pay-per-view TV and Nintendo(Tm) games are available, too.

It's the same story in the lobby. Understated luxury are the buzz-words here. Open-sided and thatch-roofed, it's got a real outdoorsy feel - enhanced by wicker chairs and glass tables that wouldn't look out of place in a conservatory. Coupled with wood carvings and indoor water features, not to mention vast stretches of marble, it's certainly impressive.

The pool area's worth talking about, too. Vast, lagoon-like and framed by a sun terrace, the main pool here has a big swim-up bar with a low-slung thatched roof providing plenty of shade. Plus there's loads to do here. The entertainment team lays on an endless supply of dance lessons, quizzes and games. You can escape to the spa. Or take your pick from sports like volleyball, basketball or tennis. But the choice doesn't end there. On the food and drink front you've got a choice of bars, the buffet restaurant and themed eateries that specialise in Asian, Mexican and barbecue food.
