An introduction to Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

Prepare to be impressed because this place has got lots of style. You only have to take one look at the lobby to know you're in for a treat. All gleaming marble floors, rattan sofas and iron chairs with cushions in cafe con leche stripes. And then there's the giant palm water feature. It's the centrepiece of this Colonial reception and it gives a taste of more tropical things to come.

Which brings us nicely to the pool. Snaking through palm-peppered grounds right down to the beach, there are 400 metres of turquoise river begging to be explored. You can even swim your way down to the beautiful Bavaro sands. A whiter than white shore lapped by larimar-blue seas, it's everything you'd expect from this pocket of paradise.

Back inside, it's hard to suppress a sigh when you see your suite. Marble floors, a whirlpool bath and a large walk-in shower are the first things you'll notice. But all the little extras come close behind. The presence sensor that tells your maid whether or not you're in – no need for a 'do not disturb' sign here. The bath robes and slippers in the wardrobe. And a special room service closet that means dinner can be served without you seeing a soul.

But the thing that makes this all inclusive oh-so exclusive is the service – which always comes with a friendly Dominican smile. There's a behind-the-scenes buzz here and a sense that nothing – from your welcome cocktail to the easy efficiency of your maid - is too much trouble.

Like we said, prepare to be impressed because Majestic is the jewel in the beach hotel crown.
