When it came to choosing a location for the Naiboa, Riu certainly knew what they were doing. They set it a little way back from the 14-mile stretch of sand, to give the place a lost-in-paradise feel. But that said, it's still just a five-minute walk down the resort's shopping hub, Caribbean Street, to get to the beach.
The hotel itself is a small four-storey number that's virtually hidden behind a screen of palm trees. And taking pride of place in the middle of the garden is a massive lagoon pool. As the biggest and best pool in the whole of Riu Resort Bavaro, it deserves plenty of praise. Cue tiny islands, a waterfall and a vast terrace freckled with palm-thatch parasols. There's even a whirlpool bath tucked among the foliage. It's the epitome of tropical chic and comes with a poolside restaurant-come-bar, too.
As far as restaurants go, there's the main restaurant, Cohiba, where international buffets, themed evenings and on-the-spot cooking stations come in colonial-style surroundings. And La Bachata poolside restaurant which offers al fresco meals with a side-order of thatching, flowers and, of course, pool views.
Inside they've kept things simple. The lobby is kept cool with peaches and cream paintwork, tiled floors and ceiling fans. Meanwhile the bedrooms are classic colonial. Think white wicker chairs, dark wood furniture and a palette of cream and green. Extras like satellite TVs and minibars add nice touches to an otherwise minimalist space.
On the activities front, Riu Naiboa pulls out all the stops. Cue sports ranging from tennis and volleyball to scuba diving lessons in the pool. Watersports down on the beach. And an entertainment team that lays on aerobics, dance classes and competitions – not to mention cabaret shows to give the West End a run for its money.
