Magnolia Cottage

Nestling in exuberant greenery just above Lapad's pine-tree shaded pedestrianised boulevard is Magnolia, an attractive russet red studio cottage. Fig and lemon trees along with miniature palms seclude Magnolia, and owner Mara's house just below, from the boulevard with morning glory and bougainvillaea adding dashes of colour. A scene so tranquil that even the resident dog and cat laze in the warm sunshine.
Magnolia itself has been built around a 150 year old palm tree, and in a further nod to the past it was once an antique shop in a former incarnation. Mara has filled the studio cottage with attractive curios, while colourful paintings of Dubrovnik and Korcula hang above the large twin beds and hand-made traditional rugs lie on the floor. There is no separate indoor sitting area, but with the attractive terrace shaded by palm fronds and furnished with a couple of chairs and a stone seating ledge, there is no need to attempt to cram any unnecessary items of furniture inside and spoil the harmonious balance. A bathroom and the welcome additions of heating and air-conditioning complete the studio.

Two short flights of stone steps lead down to pedestrianised Zvonimira which is lined with a choice of restaurants, bars and cafes. Fresh-baked bread for breakfast can be obtained from a bakery nearby, while the nearest mini-market is just a few minutes' walk away.
