Sipa Apartments

The magnificent view from the balcony aside, the bedrooms share a small side terrace with views towards the island of Lokrum, upon which Richard the Lionheart was reputedly shipwrecked. He was so grateful for the island's shelter that he donated funds towards the building of Dubrovnik's cathedral.

A short flight of steps leads down to the apartment and the sea-facing terraces from where glimpses of the sea and the Old Town can be had through the trees and vines of the owner's garden next door. In the apartment, both the living room and double bedroom have French windows opening on to the small private terrace, while the bathroom can be entered from either of these rooms.The apartment benefits from air-conditioning and a washing machine and has been furnished to a comfortable modern standard.

The apartment is owned by a civil engineer who was instrumental in the preservation of Dubrovnik's old stone buildings during the 1980s. Bozo lives in the house next door with a couple of generations of his family and they go about their daily business, including tending to their garden of roses, geraniums, vines, vegetables and lemon and olive trees, while maintaining a respectful distance from their guests.

The photographer's favourite view of Dubrovnik, which features on countless picture postcards, shows the sheer stone wall of St John's Fortress shepherding boats into the Old Harbour with the Baroque dome of the cathedral rising above a jumble of pantiled roofs - all against a backcloth of the gently moving, blue waters of the Adriatic. The requisite distance from the Old Town and the elevated hillside location both ensure that the vista will simply astound.

The walk down into the Old Town of Dubrovnik should take no more than 15 minutes and naturally a little longer on the way back up. En route to the town walls, there are a couple of four and five star hotels whose restaurants provide closer dining than the very wide choice within the town. Alternatively, you can incur the envy of far-sighted passengers on the cruise liners which moor off the coast by eating on the terrace and taking in the unforgettable views - along with a decent bottle of Croatian red or chilled white wine, of course.
