Hotel Neptun  

Location is king at Hotel Neptun. Sitting on the Lapad peninsula, just outside the centre of Dubrovnik, it couldn't be in a better spot. The bus stop is virtually on the doorstep so travelling into the old town is a doddle. And because it's slightly out of town, the hotel has a curtain of pine forest surrounding it – which means finding peace and quiet isn't a problem here. Best of all, it's right on the seafront. So everything from your room to the pool comes with panoramic sea views.

Inside, the bedrooms are cosy, cool and, thanks to a recent renovation, contemporary. They're dressed in shades of raspberry and cream with touches of forest green here and there. And design-led extras like flamboyant floral wallpaper and floor-to-ceiling curtains add a little grandeur to an otherwise simple space. Decor aside, each and every room has a seating area, satellite TV and a seaview balcony.

In terms of things to do while you're here, you're spoilt for choice. Hotel Neptun is part of the Importanneresort, which means it brings together the best of three hotels – Hotel Neptun, Hotel Ariston, Importanne Suites – and the Villa Elita. As such, there are a host of shared facilities at your disposal. Kicking things off are the pools. There a two saltwater numbers to choose from, both right by the water's edge. The restaurant sits slightly further back, but comes with the same fantastic views. And there's also a shared spa below the reception that sits between The Neptun and Hotel Ariston.
