Guide to Murato

'In this little known corner of Corsica, the hills are alive with the fragrant scent of wild flowers, fresh mountain air and enticing home cooking.'

The jaw-dropping views alone make the hilltop hamlet of Murato a to-die-for destination. Clinging to slopes carpeted with thick maquis - fragrant Corsican heather, juniper and wild herbs – this delightful village is a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

On a clear day, you can see across glittering seas in both directions. To the northwest, France hovers cloud-like in the shimmering Mediterranean. And out to the east, over the Tyrrhenian Sea, you get a tantalising glimpse of the island of Elba and the coast of Italy beyond.

Views aside, this quiet spot is probably best known for being the home of the most photographed church in Corsica. The San-Michele de Murato is a 12th century vision of green and white stripes - it looks like a giant humbug!

But there is another equally compelling reason to visit this unspoilt pocket of Corsican countryside. Namely, the food. If there's one place you should definitely stop off during your stay, it's La Ferme de Campo di Monti. Reputedly the finest farm inn on the island, you'll dine on the best of the seasons goodies at this 15-year old, family-run restaurant. Tuck into generous portions of storzapreti, tasty cheese dumplings, or hearty bowls of soup flavoured with ham, garlic, noodles, vegetables and herbs.

Fantastic food, fascinating architecture and fabulous views are what Murato is all about. In fact, the only disappointing part of your holiday will be having to go home again.
