About 9km from Chania's broad harbour and atmospheric jumble of narrow Venetian streets, Pano Stalos is the other end of the traditional Cretan spectrum. A tiny village set on a hill, with just a couple of tavernas and a village shop, this is what authentic Greece is all about. Behind it are the peaks of the White Mountains – snow-capped till early summer. Encircling it is a rural scene of wild herbs, vineyards and olive groves. And beneath it, at the water's edge, is its 'big sister', Kato Stalos – with oodles of tavernas and restaurants, as well as shops and bars. Sandy beaches hem the shoreline here, and with watersports and handy eateries, it'll be hard to tear yourself away from soaking up the sunshine here. And who could blame you? Pano Stalos is naturally a more peaceful place though, with panoramic views to complement the calm. And when you're ready to see some of the sights close-up, you're within a day-trip drive of Rethymnon's historic harbour, the blissfully deserted sands beyond Kastelli, and the twisting mountain road to Omalos – so high that eagles fly alongside. Breathtaking.
