A striking Art Deco building, the Principe di Piemonte has been beautifying the town of Viareggio since the roaring twenties. Right by the town's promenade, the beach is virtually on the doorstep. And it's just a quick stroll to the shops, bars and restaurants. All that is pretty irrelevant though - the highlight of your holiday will, without doubt, be the hotel.
Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, the Principe di Piemonte was refurbished in 2004. All the original features have been kept, like the stained-glass doors, chandeliers and antique furniture, so it's lost none of the glamour. But crisp modern decor has brought it well and truly into the noughties with fresh White walls, trendy artwork and stylish sofas.
What really sets this place apart, though, is that each of its five floors has been designed in a different style. So you can choose from a variety of themed bedrooms. For 18th-century Parisian chic go for the international floor. Equally as grand is the empire floor with its sumptuous fabrics and soft lighting. The Art Deco floor makes a statement with luxurious silks and dark-wood furnishings. And on the colonial floor, rooms evoke India, Africa and the Orient. For out and out 21st-century minimalism though, it has to be the modern floor with hip floating beds and clean White lines.
As you'd expect, the hotel has an equally hip pool scene. The rooftop pool comes with hydro-massage jets and water features and is bordered by a decked terrace with sun loungers and parasols. The panoramic views of the coast and Apuane Mountains are unbeatable. It's also worth paying a visit to the wellbeing centre up here. It's a holistic haven with a Turkish bath, a sauna, a spa and a gym.
Of course, dining here is top-notch, too. There's the classy Piccolo Principe Restaurant which looks like a sophisticated state room. And the bright Panoramic Restaurant Bar on the top floor opens out onto a terrace. Both serve fine Mediterranean cuisine and the wine cellar boasts over 400 labels. You'll find plenty of inviting lounge and bars to relax in, too, including a cool cocktail bar with retro Perspex chairs.
