Guide to Becici

'With charming Budva on its doorstep and a spectacular sandy beach, modern Becici is classic seaside resort, Montenegrin-style.'

Fancy lying on one of the best beaches in the Med? Better put Becici on your map. In the southern Adriatic near the charming city of Budva, Becici is a modern, touristy town with a selection of good quality hotels climbing the pine-dotted hills behind its waterfront. This place is totally dedicated to holidaymakers and with a beach like it has, it's not hard to understand why. A spectacular three-kilometre belt of sand and fine pebbles, it's a joy to lounge and dream away the day on. The blue waters of the Adriatic shimmer like diamonds, seeming even brighter against the backdrop of jagged coastal mountains. Watersports vendors tempt you out on the gentle waves in canoes or pedaloes. Giggling children splash at the water's edge. Lie back, run your fingers through the sand and your worries should dissolve away in minutes. Elsewhere, the colourful shops and cafes of Becici's original fishing village hover expectantly at a far end of the promenade. Rummage around for the little curios they sell before relaxing at a pavement cafe with some chilled, golden wine and a plateful of goat's cheese and ham drizzled in olive oil, the national delicacy. When you fancy some historic charm, stroll along the seafront to Budva or hop on the small train. Enclosed by 15th century fortifications, Budva's red-tiled old town is pure delight. Lose yourself in its cobbled streets, nose around its shops and amble around its pretty, restaurant-filled squares. If want to stay up late, this is where to stay. While Becici stays laid-back after dark, Budva's main seafront is packed with bars and outdoor discos to keep you from your bed.

Modern, tourist-focussed Becici is perfectly complemented by the charms of the old walled town of Budva, with its selection of cafes, restaurants and shops, which is just over a mile away along the coastal promenade, or, if you prefer, by a small train. Founded in the ninth century and destroyed and rebuilt several times, Budva is believed to be one of the oldest settlements in the Balkans. There was a Hellenic colony here as far back as the 4th century BC. The fifteenth century fortifications, protruding into the sea, include medieval ramparts and towers. Elsewhere, the architecture shows Venetian influences. The old town was built on a little island, connected to the mainland by a sandbar, which, over the centuries, has silted up to become a peninsula. The white stone walls and red-tile roofs are interspersed with bougainvillea and oleander.
Walking out of Becici in the other direction, you reach the old fishing village of Rafailovici, with its pleasant cafes and restaurants.

Budva has numerous restaurants and taverns serving local specialities, such as an hors d'oeuvre of goat cheese and ham drizzled with olive oil, or grilled fish with garlic and parsley, along with the local Vranac red wine and 'Loza' brandy. International cuisine is available at the many restaurants in Becici's modern hotels.
