An introduction to Hotel Falesia

First impressions count. And that's certainly true of the Hotel Falesia. Step inside and you'll be greeted by a vast marble lobby. Huge silver pillars support balconied floors with trailing plants spilling down into the atrium. At its centre stands a cluster of indoor palm trees.

The restaurant is equally stylish. Dominated by a massive Tiffany-style stained-glass ceiling lamp, it's made up of a series of wall-hugging banquette-style booths. It's the perfect setting for lavish buffets and gala dinners. Spacious bedrooms, meanwhile, feature attractive tiled bedheads and private balconies, and come with extras like air-conditioning, satellite TVs and minibars.

On the location front, the Falesia is cocooned by pine trees and orange groves. Taking centre-stage is a big circular pool set into a spacious sun terrace. The overall effect is one of complete seclusion.

But that's not to say you're cut off. Acoteias village is just a five-minute walk away. Here you'll find a handful of bars, restaurants and shops. And the beach is close by, too. Backed by russet cliffs, this stretch of sand is accessible via a flight of steps. And if the climb seems a little daunting, the hotel lays on a shuttle bus four times a day. A bit further afield you've got the resorts of Olhos D'agua, Albufeira and Vilamoura - great news if you're a golfer.

Back at the hotel, there's plenty in the way of facilities. There's an indoor pool with a Turkish bath and hot tub, not to mention a massage service. On the sports front there's tennis and cycling, and golf is available at the neighbouring Pine Cliffs course. As for things to do in the evening, there's live music, comedy and cabaret. The Falesia is part of the Thomson Gold range and so entertainment tops.
