The Hotel Savoy Gardens is a new addition to the Thomson Gold range – and it sailed through the selection process.

In terms of location, it's in a quiet spot, tucked away in the outskirts of Funchal. From its hillside perch, the Savoy Gardens gazes out to sea and is backed by lush banana plantations. Madeira's premier bathing spot, the Lido, is just a 10-minute stroll away. Meanwhile, Funchal's old town is about an hour's walk from the hotel – along the seafront promenade, past the cruise ships. If you don't fancy the walk though, public transport is available to run you into town.

The hotel came up trumps on the looks front, too. It was given a total renovation in 2008 so you can expect fresh, contemporary interiors. Think spacious bedrooms dressed in elegant dark-wood furniture, and mod-cons like interactive cable TV with on-demand video. The public areas are just as impressive – the lobby has a retro-chic feel while the restaurant has a sleek, almost Japanese-minimalist vibe.

The good looks continue outside, too. As the name suggests, the Savoy Gardens is cocooned in its own gardens - compact, sub-tropical and gorgeous. At its heart lies a large pool terrace, peppered with sunloungers and parasols. For more in the way of relaxation, head to the sauna or the rooftop whirlpool.

As for food, you'll be treated to international cuisine. Mornings are given over to Continental-style buffet breakfasts, while the evenings see home-from-home favourites and local dishes take pride of place on the menu. Light snacks are available during the day, too, from the poolside bar.

As with all Thomson Gold hotels, you can expect a layer-cake of activities to keep you entertained – everything from guided walks to French boules, wine-tasting sessions to shuffleboard. There's even a putting green here. There's plenty going on in the evenings, as well, with comedy, live music and glitzy shows topping the bill.
