When it comes to catering for holidays, Sao Vicente is a relative newcomer on the Madeira tourism scene. Traditionally an agricultural town, it still goes about its day-to-day business despite becoming more and more popular with visitors to the island, attracted by the quaint atmosphere and magnificent surroundings. Mind you, it's pretty lucky that any of us can take holidays to Sao Vicente. The town was buried by a massive landslide in 1928 and had to be almost entirely rebuilt from scratch.
Many people travel to Sao Vicente to enjoy its beautiful, natural surroundings. And if you're into the wonders of nature, there's no better place to stay than the Solar Da Bica lodge. Built around a traditional Madeiran house, it's the perfect base for getting up close and personal with some of the Garden Island's gorgeous scenic attractions. Alternatively, there's the Estalagem Do Vale Inn, a restored 18th century manor house in a spectacular mountain setting. It's a delightfully civilised place to stay, steeped in old colonial style, with a top quality restaurant, a games room, library, sauna, Turkish bath, and even a croquet lawn!
Apart from the glorious scenery, another highlight of your Sao Vicente holiday has to be a visit to the nearby Sao Vicente Caves. Next to the river of the same name, they are no less than 400 millennia old. And you'll be amazed at the stalactites and lava cakes that adorn the walls as you make your way through the network of volcanic tunnels.
