'They don't come much more authentically Andalucian than Frigiliana, a Moorish hillside village with stacks of charm.'
A top-notch example of the 'pueblo blanco', Frigiliana has been voted 'prettiest village in Andalucia' by the Spanish tourist board. Clinging to a hillside with the peaks of the Sierra Almijara as a backdrop, it's a classic combination of white-washed, bougainvillea draped houses, narrow streets and small, shady plazas. There are also several little shops selling locally produced ceramics, hand painted in vibrant colours. As the sun begins to set, Frigiliana's visitors return to the coastal resorts and the village relaxes into a sleepy atmosphere. This is the time to take a walk up El Fuerte, the cone-shaped hill that rises behind the houses. You can stand amongst the olive trees and feast your eyes on the amazing view over the rolling countryside and the Mediterranean Sea beyond. It's the perfect prelude to a mouth-watering meal in one of Frigiliana's traditional restaurants, rounded off with a glass of honey-sweet Malaga dessert wine, straight from the local vineyards. If you feel like a day at the beach, just down the road there's Nerja, which has several good stretches of sand. It's also a fun place to spend an evening, with the 'Balcon de Europa' providing a promenade for an early evening stroll, as well bars and restaurants serving everything from paella to pizza. As for local sightseeing, don't miss the Nerja Caves, an amazing underground world of colourful rock formations, with a huge cavern used as an auditorium for the annual International Festival of Music and Dance.
