An introduction to Hotel Portaventura

More a Mediterranean village than a hotel, the Hotel PortAventura sits just a stone's throw from the gates of Spain's most-famous theme park. It's surrounded by tropical greenery with rooms spread out in palm-height houses. Painted peach and cream, they're designed to echo the Spanish-style apartments the locals live in. What's more, they come with higgledy-piggledy terracotta roofs and mismatched balconies and French windows – authentic down to the last detail.

Inside, rooms are light, airy and decorated in rose red and cream. Chunky dark wood furniture gives things a rustic edge, while satellite TV and air-conditioning come as standard. On the upgrade front, the special Club Woody and Friends rooms offer family fun without compromising on style. Think cartoon-like decor, bathrobes for the whole family and a special child-sized bathroom door alongside the main one. Not to mention parent-friendly extras like complimentary newspapers.

Outside, the pool scene is worth writing home about. Taking centre-stage are two enormous lagoon-style pools. Set into a spacious sun terrace they come with plenty of sunbeds and white canvas parasols. Plus there's a whirlpool tub with views over the pools. There's a poolside snack bar, too. As for activities, with a gym and tennis courts on offer, there's plenty to do if you fancy a break from the park.

Food-wise, there are three main eateries to choose from. Take your pick from the, aptly-named Buffet del Port where buffet meals are teamed with lovely lake views. There's pizza and pasta at Port Regata restaurant, or you can tuck into Mediterranean fusion food among the terracotta-coloured arches of the Spanish-style La Cascada.

Just returned from two weeks at this hotel. (two adults and our 11yr old son ) had a great time. Room quality is as I have come to expect from thomson but the outside areas were exceptional. well kept gardens and beautiful pool areas. we went half board... more on this review
