Holidays in La Palma are right up your street if you're looking for a an undiscovered gem. This pretty island is off most people's radars, but that's its charm. It's quiet. It's unspoilt. And it's totally peaceful. If you want an authentic picture of the Canaries, this is the place to go.
As you walk round the island you'll feel like the subject of a postcard. The quaint whitewashed houses of sleepy towns mingle with tasteful low rise resorts. Then there's La Palma's trump card- the scenery. Think mountains covered in sweet-smelling pines. Dramatic ravines. And sun-dappled evergreen forests. It's also home to the largest volcano in the world, La Caldera de Taburiente. It's one sight you simply have to se on your holidays. No wonder locals call it La Isla Bonita- the beautiful island.
If you prefer your summer holidays to lean towards beaches and sun cream, that's no problem. Although you won't find golden sands galore, La Palma does have its fair share of beaches. You'll find a few hideaway coves along with some sandy beaches. Most are concentrated around Puerto Naos, Puerto de Tazacorte and Los Cancajos. All three offer striking strips of black volcanic sand, where you can relax under the warm sun.
When it comes to eating out, there are plenty of tapas bars and harbour-side seafood restaurants. Tuck into dishes like churros de pescado- crispy fishcakes coasted in a salty batter- and sancocho de pescado, which is a slow cooked salty fish with vegetables and potatoes.
Holidays in La Palma are one of the Canaries' best-kept secrets. Isn't it time you discovered them?
