Away from Puerto del Carmen's neon-lit beachfront strip, you'll find the more up market old quarter. And exclusive holidays to Puerto del Carmen tend to focus around this particular part of town. Set around the harbour, it's higgledy-piggledy whitewashed streets are lined with inviting tapas bars and waterside fish restaurants. Pull up a chair and take your pick from dishes like lightly grilled calamari and sea bass plucked straight from the ocean. Not far from here you'll also find a shopping centre called the Biosphere. Inside it's filled with chi-chi boutiques and classy stores.

Restaurants and shops aside, Puerto del Carmen is great if you're looking to hit the beach, too. Of course there's Puerto del Carmen's main beach, the enormous ribbon of sand that is Playa Grande, but it can get busy during the high season. So here's a hot tip – dotted along the coast are a series of small beaches, just past the Hotel San Antonio. Follow the steps down to these hideaway sweeps and unfurl you'll beach towel in relative seclusion. And when the tide comes in, do what the locals do, retreat to the rocks. They make a rather surprising comfortable perch.

So, for a bit of the old five star holiday treatment, Puerto del Carmen is a great choice. And it's perfectly placed to get out and about to the neighbouring luxurious holiday hotspots of Puerto Calero and Playa Blanca, too. Enjoy.
