If you really want to experience local life, they don't come any more authentic than Casa Barbara. The real Majorcan deal, this pretty townhouse sits at the heart of Pollensa old town. In fact, you couldn't get a more central location, with shops, bars and restaurants just a few minutes stroll away. And if you want to head for the crumbly sands, Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia and Cala San Vicente are all within easy driving distance.

Despite its town setting, you'll find life at Casa Barbara pretty relaxing. A three-storey stone building with green shutters and a wrought-iron balcony, it laces a typical narrow street, away from the main hub. Step inside and a cool oasis of old-worlde charm greets you. We're talking high ceilings with wooden beams. Whitewashed walls. And a mix of red and patterned tiled floors.

Surprisingly light and airy, make your way up to the first floor and you'll find a small kitchenette with mod cons like dishwasher. An elegant dining room with seating for six. And a tranquil living room with a television and DVD player. Climb the stairs to the top floor and there are two twin rooms and one double ensuite, all of which have French-style balconies.

The real piece de resistance here though has to be the delightful outdoor terrace. Spilling out through French doors from the lounge, this small but private space has cushioned sun beds, pretty potted plants and most impressively, a refreshing plunge pool. Forget fancy villas. Come and mingle with the locals at this traditional town charmer.
